So I got home from work around 5:45 and, though my brother and sister-in-law were here and my mother insisted that I sit down for a family dinner (such constraints on my writing time), I managed to write around 1100 word before heading off for the weekly poker game with my friends. I lost at poker, despite having the big stack for the majority of the second game (I just like the challenge too much to bully everyone), I did come home and write some more.
Nothing major happened, mostly back story. I did, however, manage to create the single most evil character ever invented by any writer in the history of the written word. This foul creature is Jared, Simon's stepfather. This demon from the pit is the cause of Simon's current state and, I hope, will serve as a point of contrast for my readers. By this I mean that I hope Simon's mean characteristics will pale in comparison to his stepfather's and redeem him a little in the eyes of the readers. We'll have to see.
I would give you a quote from today, but most of it is so vile, I would be censored right off of the internet, never to receive email again.
Anyway, I managed a daily total of 2018.
This brings the overall total of my novel to 11,506. (Sorry, Barbara, I'm still ahead.)
Catch up, Jenny, I can't wait to see what's happening in your novel at 11000 words.
Oh, by the way, I did learn a valuable lesson today: If you have an idea in your head, but you aren't sure where to put it in the time line of the novel, just write it. You can fix the order later. You can fix everything later, remember?
I just wrote two full days (almost) of pure back story with only a weak (very weak) connection to the plot. I'll figure out where it should go later.
Catch me if you can!

Great lesson learned, Adam. It doesn't matter what, if any, place the words have in the greater novel, it's just important to get them down when the idea's hot.
I am not going to pick up the gaunlet you have flung at my feet. You can stay ahead. I am going to take my time and write at my own pace. You run on ahead spewing words everywhere, my words are prettier than yours are anyway. So there. ;-)
